Photo by SO.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>When they want to pay homage to fromage, cheese lovers in Europe make a pilgrimage to France. In the U.S., the destination is Vermont or California. In Canada, there is only one choice: Qu\u00e9bec.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite much progress in Ontario and British Columbia in the last decade, Qu\u00e9bec remains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.routedesfromages.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada&#8217;s leading artisan-cheese region<\/a>. With about half of Canada&#8217;s 180 cheese producers based in Qu\u00e9bec, its leading role isn&#8217;t likely to end anytime soon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For Canadian cheese lovers, the easiest way to find Mecca in Qu\u00e9bec is to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marchespublics-mtl.com\/English\/Jean-Talon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March\u00e9 Jean-Talon<\/a> in Montr\u00e9al. Which is what Significant Other and I did with a great friend in cheese, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HscsB-QQC5A\">Vanessa Simmons<\/a>, cheese sommelier at Savvy Company in Ottawa. We have many friends who love cheese, many friends who love food, but only in Vanessa do SO and I find an appetite for food, drink and adventure to match ours.<\/p>\n<p>We warmed up for March\u00e9 Jean-Talon by visiting Complexe Desjardins in downtown Montreal to say hello to cheesemakers taking part in the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealenlumiere.com\/gastronomie\/fete-fromages-ici.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La F\u00eate des fromages d\u2019ici<\/a>. It was good to see so many producers represented by <a href=\"http:\/\/fromagesduquebec.qc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plaisirs Gourmets<\/a> at the show. SO and I sampled our way around for several hours and then caught up with Vanessa to compare notes and purchases. No surprise that our wallets were $150 lighter and bags similarly heavier.<\/p>\n<p>What makes March\u00e9 Jean-Talon such a perfect Mecca for cheese lovers is that here one finds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemarchedessaveurs.com\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le March\u00e9 des Saveurs du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamoutonniere.com\/Nouveau%20Site\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bergerie La Moutonni\u00e8re<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/search?q=Fromagerie+Qui+Lait+cru%3F&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fromagerie Qui Lait Cru?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chevreriedubuckland.square.site\/\">Ch\u00e8vrerie du Buckland<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and across the lane:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fromageriehamel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fromagerie Hamel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Short of spending weeks driving from cheesemaker to cheesemaker around Qu\u00e9bec, it doesn&#8217;t get much better than this.<\/p>\n<p>Two hours and more than $350 later, here&#8217;s what we had in our cooler bags:<\/p>\n<p><strong>OUR Photo by VS.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And if all that wasn&#8217;t enough, Vanessa forced us to accompany her to <a href=\"http:\/\/schwartzsdeli.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Schwartz&#8217;s Montr\u00e9al Hebrew Delicatessen<\/a> for lunch of the most famous smoked meat in Canada. Oh, the agony!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>\u00a0\u2014Georgs Kolesnikovs<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Georgs Kolesnikovs, cheesehead-in-cheef at CheeseLover.ca and director of <a href=\"http:\/\/cheesefestival.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Great Canadian Cheese Festival<\/a>, lived in Montr\u00e9al when Oka was still made Trappists at Oka.
