(CNW Group\/Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC))<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Jason Bangerter, executive chef, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oliverbonacini.com\/Luma.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O&amp;B Canteen and Luma<\/a> restaurants in Toronto, won the coveted cheese grater trophy for his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dairygoodness.ca\/cheese\/all-you-need-is-cheese\/recipes\/niagara-gold-crunch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niagara Gold Crunch<\/a> at the\u00a02012 Grate Canadian Grilled Cheese Cook-Off sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dairyfarmers.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dairy Farmers of Canada<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jason-bangerter-niagara-gold-crunch-1.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[3631]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Jason Bangerter- Niagara Gold Crunch\" src=\"https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/jason-bangerter-niagara-gold-crunch-1.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Bangerter- Niagara Gold Crunch\" width=\"468\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Niagara Gold Crunch was judged the best grilled-cheese sandwich of 2012 in Canada.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The winning creation was reminiscent of a gourmet grilled ham and cheese, but the chef used shaved prosciutto and baby arugula as a filling between layers of that wonderful <a href=\"http:\/\/uppercanadacheese.com\/page\/our-unique-artisanal-cheeses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niagara Gold,<\/a> spread with a thyme, garlic and black pepper mayo and served with pickled grapes. (CNW Group\/Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC))<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The competing chefs hailed from four provinces of Canada: Ned Bell, executive chef, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fourseasons.com\/vancouver\/dining\/restaurants\/yew_restaurant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Four Seasons Hotel<\/a> Vancouver, British Columbia; Liana Robberecht, executive chef, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calpeteclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Calgary Petroleum Club<\/a>, Calgary, Alberta;\u00a0Jason Bangerter, executive chef, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oliverbonacini.com\/Canteen.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O&amp;B Canteen &amp; Luma<\/a>, Toronto, Ontario; and Michael Howell, chef and owner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tempestuous.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tempestous Culinary,<\/a> Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"size-full wp-image-3632\">Each chef \u00a0prepared two different sandwiches to present to the judges. Bangerter&#8217;s other entry was a sweet grilled cheese, filled with strawberries, raspberry liqueur, and layered with basil and Canadian Mascarpone.
