Click on any image for an enlarged view.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>If you sailed to Iles de la Madeleine in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, you could visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fromageduquebec.qc.ca\/en\/cheeses\/?cheese=Pied-de-Vent\">Fromagerie du Pied-de-Vent<\/a>. On the west coast, you could call at Salt Spring Island in the Strait of Georgia and visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saltspringcheese.com\/\">Salt Spring Island Cheese<\/a>. But you\u2019d have to hike or cab to get to the cheese.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Ontario, you can step off the boat and in less that one minute be inside <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecountycheesecompany.ca\/\">the County Cheese Company<\/a> to taste and purchase artisan cheese. By the spring of 2013, Thomson plans to be producing sheep\u2019s milk cheese in the Old Waupoos Canning Factory building on the marina property.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">Thomson isn\u2019t exactly a newcomer to cheese. He started <a href=\"http:\/\/kendalvale.ca\/cheese.html\">KendalVale Cheese<\/a> about a year ago. He transports Ontario sheep\u2019s milk to Quebec where it\u2019s turned into fine cheese at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamoutonniere.com\/\">La Moutonni\u00e8re<\/a>, an established award-winning fromagerie operated by Lucille Giroux and Alastair Mackenzie in the village of Sainte-H\u00e9l\u00e8ne-de-Chester.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\">The KendalVale cheeses\u2014Magie de Ganaraska, Commanda, Voyageur and Champlain\u2014have quickly become favorites with cheese lovers in Ontario and chefs such as Jamie Kennedy. County Cheese will operate the caf\u00e9 during the fall, winter and spring.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Following the closing of <a href=\"http:\/\/cheeseloverca.wordpress.com\/2011\/08\/17\/fifth-town-wont-be-the-same-fifth-town-without-petra\/\">Fifth Town Artisan Cheese<\/a> early this year. Thomson saw an opportunity to develop a cheese production facility in Prince Edward County, often called the hottest new culinary destination in Ontario. He did consider making a bid for Fifth Town assets but decided to pursue his own direction with the support of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pelacfdc.ca\/\">Prince Edward\/Lennox &amp; Addington Community Futures Development Corporation<\/a> (PELA CFDC)* and others, including Linda Bell, owner of Waupoos Marina.<\/p>\n<p>By boat or other means, Waupoos is about to become a must-stop on any visit to <a href=\"http:\/\/tastetrail.ca\/\">Prince Edward County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackrivercheese.com\/\">Black River Cheese Company<\/a>, which has been producing cheddar in the County since 1901, is a short distance from Waupoos. There is a small dock at the rear of the plant on Black River but we&#8217;re not certain it can be reached by anything but a small boat.
