As true pilgrims, we trudge on foot, some two hours, between March\u00e9<em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em><em> <\/em><\/em> Jean-Talon and our downtown hotel on Boulevard Ren\u00e9 L\u00e9vesque.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marche-jean-talon.com\/\">March\u00e9<em> <\/em><em> <\/em><em><em> <\/em><\/em> Jean-Talon<\/a>, the largest year-round farmer&#8217;s market in Montreal, is where one finds the head office and main retail store of <a href=\"http:\/\/fromageriehamel.com\/index_en.php\">La fromagerie Hamel<\/a>\u2014in the cheese business since 1961.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1015\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/px_cl_gch13_hamel-1.jpg\" data-lightbox=\"gal[1014]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1015\" title=\"px_cl_gch13_hamel\" src=\"https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/px_cl_gch13_hamel-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/px_cl_gch13_hamel-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/cheeselover.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/px_cl_gch13_hamel-1-300x185.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There are some 700 varieties of cheese on display at La fromagerie Hamel in March\u00e9 Jean-Talon in Montreal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>La fromagerie Hamel now has five locations in Montreal including the flagship store at Jean-Talon. The name comes from its founder, Fernand Hamel, who owned the business until 1988 when it was purchased by Marc Picard who runs the business today with his wife, Murielle Chaput, and his son, Ian Picard, who has been the master fromager affineur for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Camille, one of the friendly, bilingual experts in cheese who looks after customers, introduced us to three new-to-us Quebec cheeses that we will report on in due course:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fromagesdici.com\/www\/alfred_fermier_en.asp\">Alfred fermier<\/a>, a farmstead organic raw cow&#8217;s milk cheese from\n<div>Eastern Townships<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fromagesdici.com\/www\/kenogami_en.asp\">Kenogami fermier<\/a>, a farmstead thermalized cow&#8217;s milk cheese from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fromagesdici.com\/www\/mamirolle_en.asp\">Mamirolle<\/a>, a pasteurized cow&#8217;s milk cheese from Central Quebec aged in the cave at La fromagerie Hamel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La fromagerie Hamel is the oldest cheese retailer in Quebec and, as far as we can make out, the second oldest in Canada. Olympic Cheese Mart at St. Lawrence Market in Toronto started cheesemongering in 1958. The high-profile Cheese Boutique in Toronto opened its doors in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>Non-cheese footnotes on eating our way around Montreal for a week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excellent dim sum can be enjoyed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restaurantlamaisonkamfung.com\/\">La Maison Kam Fung<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li>In the battle of bagels, we declare a draw between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stviateurbagel.com\/main\/\">St-Viateur  Bagel<\/a> and the relative newcomer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairmountbagel.com\/\">Fairmount Bagel.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>There is no question: The best smoked meat sandwich is served at <a href=\"Le Festival des Fromages de Warwick.\">Schwartz&#8217;s Hebrew Delicatessen<\/a>, a Montreal tradition since 1928.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;\"><em>\u2014Georgs Kolesnikovs<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Georgs Kolesnikovs, Cheese-Head-in-Chief at CheeseLover.ca, departs Montreal tomorrow with his Significant Other for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.festivaldesfromages.qc.ca\/\">Le Festival des Fromages de  Warwick<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On our final full day in Montreal, we make a pilgrimage to the oldest cheesemonger in Quebec.
