Cheese festival returns to Prince Edward County

Artisan Ontario cheese—in all its delicious manifestations—will be in the spotlight at the new Ontario Cheese Festival.

Alleluia, a cheese festival is returning to Prince Edward County!

The Ontario Cheese Festival will take place September 28 in Picton, Ontario, showcasing delicious cheese and tasty artisan foods from leading producers across the province.

There is nothing like a cheese festival for sampling and purchasing the best in artisan cheese.

Taste and buy the best in cheese made from cow, sheep, goat and water buffalo milk, plus wine, cider, craft beer and spirits, and jams, honey, charcuterie, pickles and more.

Learn about artisan cheese at tutored tastings conducted by outstanding cheese educators. Discover what pairs best with which cheese.

Ontario Cheese Festival is the brainchild of Patricia McDermott, owner of Agrarian Market in Picton since 2012 and operator of farmers markets in the County for the last 15 years.

“After starting my cheese shop in Bloomfield in the County over 10 years ago, and attending The Great Canadian Cheese Festival, I knew I wanted to bring my love of cheese to more people. I’ve supported the local food movement for over a decade and this event is the next logical step.  With the support of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, we are excited to bring you the Ontario Cheese Festival, a celebration of Ontario cheese and dairy.”

The festival will unfold at The Cape, a meticulously restored landmark a short walk from Picton’s Main Street. The sprawling Georgian manor was built in 1863 as a private residence. While it was owned by an American railway tycoon, the residence greeted Prime Ministers and dignitaries. Today, The Cape, with its stunning façade, spacious grounds, reception rooms, veranda, ballroom and extensive garden, serves as a magnificent event space.

More than 50 exhibitors and vendors are expected for the festival, including many of Ontario’s leading cheese producers. Among the first to sign up:

Wildwoood made by Stonetown Artisan Cheese.

Stonetown Artisan Cheese of St. Marys, makers of handcrafted Alpine-style cheeses;

Mountainoak Cheese of New Hamburg, makers of award-winning Gouda and other European-style cheeses;

Empire Cheese & Butter Co-operative of Campbellford, makers of award-winning cheddars since the 1876;

A selection of cheese made by Upper Canada Cheese Company.

Upper Canada Cheese Company of Jordan Station, makers of small-batch artisan cheese made exclusively with the milk of Guernsey cows;

Bushgarden Farmstead Cheese of Elgin, where Nigel Smith uses raw milk from his own herd of cows to make cheese;

Golspie Dairy of Oxford County near Woodstock, dairy farming since 1874, making fresh milk British-style cheese since 2022.

You’ll be able to sample wine and purchase it, if 19+, from some of the best wineries in Ontario, such as Case Dea Winery of Wellington and Tawse Winery of Vineland.

For something totally different try vodka or a cream liquor made from milk at Vodkow Dairy Distillery of Mississippi Mills.

Deepen your knowledge and appreciation of cheese at three different cheese tastings and pairings. In each seminar, you’ll taste and learn about up to eight fabulous artisan cheeses, selected artisan condiments, plus offerings of wine, craft beer, cider or spirits, all from our exhibitors. You’ll learn the story of the coveted cheeses and the passionate people who make them, plus tips on how to present, pair and appreciate the culinary treasures.

Seminars will be led and cheeses selected by acclaimed cheese sommelier Vanessa Simmons of Ottawa and cheese educator Roxanne Renwick of Toronto.

Sponsorship for the festival is being provided by Ontario Dairy Farmers, the marketing organization and regulatory body representing more than 4,000 dairy farmers in Ontario. Additional support comes from Longo’s, the supermarket chain.

Admission to the festival and all exhibitors and vendors is $75.00 per person which includes an insulated souvenir tote bag for your purchases, a tasting glass for sampling wine, beer, cider and spirits (19+) and free parking.

There will be live music to entertain you.

Children 10 years and younger admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Admission to tutored tastings is $30.00 per person per tasting which covers up to eight artisan cheeses, selected artisan condiments, plus offerings of wine, craft beer, cider or spirits (19+).

Personally, I cannot wait. From my experience as founder and director of The Great Canadian Cheese Festival in Picton from 2011 to 2017, there is nothing quite like gathering with kindred spirits to try and buy the best of artisan cheese and sample other artisan foods in the ambiance of Prince Edward County.

I’m planning to make a weekend of it. I hope you will, too. See you there!

QC14: Festival des Fromagers Artisans du Québec

Some 10,000 cheese enthusiasts made the pilgrimage to Sainte-Elisabeth-de-Warwick.
Some 10,000 cheese enthusiasts made the pilgrimage to Sainte-Elisabeth-de-Warwick, population 374.

We begin our three-week tour of Québec with Festival des Fromagers Artisans du Québec, the annual celebration of fromages fins organized by the association of artisan-cheese producers. This year, the two-day festival was held at Fromagerie du Presbytere in the village of Sainte-Elisabeth-de-Warwick two hours east of Montréal.

With the support of Mayor Luc Le Blanc, Presbytere’s owner, Jean Morin, was able to convert the main street of the village into a cheese fair that attracted some 10,000 cheese enthusiasts. Morin’s cheese plant and shop—located in a former rectory (presbytere)—sits across the street from Ferme Louis d’Or, the dairy farm his family has operated for four generations.

A tiny bakery turns out wonderful breads adjacent to the cheese plant. Morin also invited local producers—a charcuterie specialist, a winemaker and a craft brewery—to complement the cheese available for tasting and purchase.

The annual festival rotates from one member producer to another. Next year’s venue will be announced soon.

Cheesemobile heads to Gaspésie this summer

Our elegant cheesemobile, aka a Buick Verano Turbo, at Mt. Revelstoke in B.C.

Another successful Great Canadian Cheese Festival is behind us and it’s time to start planning another road trip—in search of cheese and other delights.

 Last summer, an elegant Buick Verano Turbo served as the cheesemobile as we hunted for the best in cheese in British Columbia and researched venues for a future Great Canadian Cheese Festival West.

This summer, the general plan is to head into Québec and eventually circumnavigate iconic Gaspésie to satiate our second love—fresh seafood. Of course, a visit to the region’s sole cheesemaker, Fromagerie du Littoral, will be on the itinerary.

Here’s the travel plan that’s taking shape:

  • Initial destination: Ste Elisabeth de Warwick two hours east of Montreal.
  • Festival Des Fromagers Artisans du Québec held this year at Fromagerie du Presybytère. The annual festival travels from cheesemaker to cheesemaker and attracts upwards of 10,000 cheese enthusiasts.
  • Visit Fromagerie Abbaye deSaint-Benoît-du-Lac and Fromage de La Station in Eastern Townships.
  • Fromagerie FX Pichet in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade. home of Le Baluchon, the Canadian Cheese of the Year.
  • Grand tour of Gaspésie, some 1,200 km in all, searching for the freshest seafood and other culinary delights during 10 days along the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River and into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Breathtaking panoramas and tasty maritime cuisine await.
  • Fromagerie le Détour in Témiscouata-sur-le-Lac, home of Magie de Madawaska, a wonderful soft cheese worth driving many days for.
  • Overnight visit to Isle aux Grues in the middle of the St. Lawrence River east of Quebec City from whence comes Riopelle, one of Canada’s iconic cheeses, named after Jean-Paul Riopelle, a larger-than-life painter and sculptor who spent his summers on Isle aux Grues and died there.
  • Return home to Ontario with coolers full of goodies.

More, as it develops.

If you have recommendations for must-make-stops along the proposed route, we’d love to hear them. Click here to e-mail CheeseLover.ca.

Cheese lovers love the County as Festival venue

page2-cf_county_map

Cheese lovers have expressed strong support for Prince Edward County as the ideal venue for The Great Canadian Cheese Festival.

  • In a January survey, 96% of attendees at the 2012 event said they would return to Picton for another Cheese Festival, while 90% of those who have never attended, said they would attend in the future.
  • Meanwhile, only 50% would attend a Cheese Festival in Toronto, 35% in Ottawa, and 28% in Montreal.

“Needless to say, there is no change in our commitment to produce Canada’s only annual celebration of artisan cheese in an appealing small-town, out-in-the-country setting that has been the Festival’s home since its inception,” says Georgs Kolesnikovs, event founder and director.

The third annual Great Canadian Cheese Festival will take place June 1-2 in Crystal Palace on the Prince Edward Fairgrounds in Picton, in the heart of Prince Edward County, Ontario. Cheese tours and a cooking class will be offered on Friday, May 31.

Earlybird ticket sales are under way at at www.cheesefestival.ca.

Prince Edward County is an appealing destination for cheese and food lovers for many reasons,” says Kolesnikovs. “The awesome array of wineries is a huge draw. The range of artisan food producers is quite impressive for such a small region.

“Soon, the County will again be a significant force in artisan cheesemaking. Award-winning Fifth Town Artisan Cheese will resume production later this year under new ownership, and a newcomer, County Cheese Company, aims to start production this summer. Of course, Black River Cheese has been in business in the County since 1901.”

The Great Canadian Cheese Festival is a multi-faceted, two-day event that annually attracts thousands of consumers to meet, learn, taste and buy the best in artisan cheese and fine foods and sample fine wine, craft beer and crisp cider. Dairy Farmers of Canada is the lead sponsor, presenting seminars throughout the day in the All You Need Is Cheese® Annex.

The Artisan Cheese & Fine Food Fair features a Dairy Farm display for the enjoyment of young and old. Also on the program are Tutored Tastings where experts offer guidance on a variety of cheese topics.

The Cheese Festival also features a special Saturday evening social functions. Winners of the Canadian Cheese Grand Prix are on the menu as the cheese course at Gastronomy on the Farm with Jamie Kennedy.

Last year, close to 100 exhibitors and vendors and more than 3,000 consumers made the event the largest cheese show in Canada representing producers from coast to coast. One-third of the participating cheese producers come from Québec.
